The difference is that Papillons are one of the few toy breeds that are actually CUTE.
Better? Only you can dicide that, specially in this case… Because I am not a big fan of small breeds. However, here it goes (and I am praying to a “best answers”…)
1. LOOKS
Papillons are known for their large, butterfly-like ears. Papillons are parti-colored (white with markings of any color). An all white dog or a dog with no white is disqualified from the conformation show ring. The Papillon is considered to be a “wash and wear” breed and does not require excessive grooming. Papillons have a coat of fine fur, single length coat. As puppies, papillons have short length fur and as adults, the coat is long and silky. Their fur is very long, plush and fluffy.
They are very cute dogs but a little bit silly looking.
NOTE if you buy a papillon from a backyard breeder, make sure you get the papers THAT DAY. Backyard breeders say that the dog is a papillon but it really is a crossbreed.
Chihuahuas can be really TINY like this http://yeinjee.com/discovery/wp-content/… and they measure up to 12 or 15 inches. They usually dont weight more than 1.8 kilograms.
They have a huge range of colours, from black and tan to white, black, saddle… They have bat like ears and a short coat which requires no grooming. Long fur varieties, though, can need daily and intense fur care.
TEMPERAMENT
The Papillon has the appearance of a dainty toy breed, but many owners will claim that their dogs are “big dogs in little dog suits”. Some people find that their Papillon is very capable of handling a good five-mile walk. One aspect of the Papillon that has led many to believe the “big dog” assertion is this breed’s surprising athletic ability. Perhaps people are surprised that in contrast to its staid and stately representation in the Old Master portraits, the Papillon is highly energetic and intelligent.
Papillons are rated as the 8th most inteligent dog. Provided their genetic structure is sound and they are healthy, Papillons are built for movement, and most do not need any encouragement to apply their energy to athletic activities.
It can be very possessive over his food, toys, or even his owner, and will grow more attached to one person of the family.
Chihuahuas are snappy and easily provoked, and make excelent guard dogs because they are very territorial. A chihuahua can have several barking issues, like irritant little dogs who never shut up [most toy breeds, so huh]. The AKC describes the breed as, “A graceful, alert, swift-moving little dog with saucy expression, compact, and with terrier-like qualities of temperament.” However, Chihuahuas rank #67 out of 79 breeds on intelligence. The breed tends to be fiercely loyal to one particular owner, but may be attached to more. They do not always get along with other breeds. These traits generally make them unsuitable for households with small or boisterous children. But there are exeptions.
CARES TO HAVE
Papillons need propper potty and other training. They are very active dogs who demand walks, plays, they need to be always learning something new otherwise they get bored. They have to socialize early with strangers.
Due to their cute coats, they need to be brushed every single day.
Chihuahuas need to be well educated, otherwise they can get the small dog syndrome. Most of the small dog syndrome victims carry themselves around popping out a bag of an old lady, with a tiara on its head, barking to get her attention.
They also need to be socialized early to children, dogs, etc.
Long fur kinds need to be daily brushed, too.
