My Friend Might Be Getting A Dog, Can I Have A Little Advice, Please…?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
Okay, so I just found out yesterday that my friend might be getting a dog next year. At first I was really jealous – I mean, I’ve been researching and planning for over a year now, and then suddenly she might be getting a dog at the same time. Then I decided just to help her make the most of it. So I started off by asking what type they have in mind. She said maybe some sort of Spaniel. Then I asked her to tell me what she wants in a dog. Then I asked where she would be getting it from, and she said they hadn’t thought about it. So then I told her not to get one from a backyard breeder or a pet shop, and she got all huffy and asked where to get one from (she thought every breeder was a backyard breeder, so I had to explain that for her), and I told her either from a reputable breeder (but I get the feeling the family doesn’t want to spend that much) or a rescue, pound, shelter, etc.
Anyway, so what I wanted to ask is: do you think this family is ready for a dog? Do you think they have unrealistic expectations? If you think they’re ready, what kind of dog do you think would suit them? (I realise that if they get one from a shelter, etc, it may not be a purebred, but this is just a rough starting point)
Okay, here’s what my friend said she wants in a dog:
*Something energetic, but only when she wants it to be (i.e. not hyper)
*Something around the size of a Jack Russell or Cocker Spaniel (maybe a little bigger)
*Something with short hair
*Something that doesn’t shed (because they already have a cat that sheds…?)
*Something that will get along with cats, and the dogs next door
*Something that is intelligent, but not so intelligent it will get destructive if left alone
*Something that’s easy to train
*Something that doesn’t require much grooming
*Something that can be left alone for a while (as in, sometimes up to a day by itself)
*Something cute (how shallow is that?)
*Something that is able to live entirely outside (as in, rarely ever coming into the house, sleeping outside, eating outside, etc)
*Something that is a puppy (even though they are quite a busy family)
*Something that is easy for people who have never had dogs to handle
*Something fairly common, and pretty cheap
*Something that’s good with children (my friend is fourteen, and her sister is about twelve)
Okay, so do you think they should get a dog? Also, when I asked my friend which of these traits were more important (like, did she really want a small dog, but not so much mind about the shedding?) she said they were all as important as each other. Which means she pretty much wants to find a dog that exactly suits their lifestyle. Which I can’t find.
These are the breeds I’m thinking of, but not one of them meets all the criteria:
Jack Russell, Border Terrier, Cavalier King Charles, Cocker Spaniel, Springer Spaniel (both types), Welsh Corgi (both types), Papillon, Poodle (all types), Schanuzer, Beagle, Schipperke, Shetland Sheepdog, Norfolk/Norwich Terrier, Staffy, and Brittany.
What do you think? Sorry this question is so long, but I always make sure everything is detailed, so as (hopefully) not to be misunderstood. Any serious answers are appreciated. Thanks.
Anyone Have Any Experience With Papillons?

Those cute little butterfly dogs? The ones that look like bat-dog.
My family wants to adopt a puppy but we dont know what breed. Me and my sister have recently been fighting over mini pinschers and mini poodles.
There are problems with both though. Miniture pinschers dont seem like good dogs for first-time owners and the poodle fur seems really hard to manage. Plus, my sister just doesnt like them.
We have recently turned our attention towards other breeds and Papillons seem like really nice dogs. However I dont want to buy one without asking for opinions from real people.
What do you think? Do they shed a lot? Are they easy to train? Housetrain? What was your experience?
What Should I Expect? I Have So Many Questions!?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
So tommorow I am going to the pound and rescue a dog hopefully a puppy. I already have a 5 year old papillon mix, he is a little jealous but I plan on doing a proper introduction so that no jealousy arises. So my question is what should I expect going to the pound in terms of the dogs there? ( by the way im in a city) . Are there always puppies? Do the dogs/puppies generally com healthy or do they sometimes come out sick (ex kennel cough, manges, parvo, etc) What should I ask? Also should I rescue a puppy or a slightly older dog? Or what breed or mix do you suggest:: Heres my living situation
I already had a huge dog, unfortunately it died a few months ago, so my mom doesnt like big dogs because she thinks they are to much to handle. I dont think so and I would be responsible in training and I personally would be up for it., (by the way Im 23 so its not my first and Im not a little teenager or kid) She really has her heart set on a littler one but I would also like a bigger one to walk and jog with me. Exercise wouldnt be an issue. The other issue my mom has is that she wants a low – no shed dog. So what are your thoughts- puppy or adult dog? small or bigger dog? if so what breed/s ( considering the fact that alot of the dogs are mutts in the pound) and again what are some questions should I ask them? by the way I am going by myself. Thanks for your help and no sarcastic or rude answers.
Hyperactive Dog, Cant Train Him, Could Have Mental Issues?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
i rescued and adopted a dog 4 months back, first he had seperation anxiety then he got over it, but he is just toooooo hyperactive, never gets tired, he plays with his rubber ball all by himself, takes it tosses in the air then catches it. He will be on the couch playing with the ball and it will fall on the floor 100times and 100times he will pick it up and make it fall the same way.
When i want to take him out for a walk as soon as he sees me taking the leash he gets so excited, so hyperactive he starts making these squeeking noises and just goes crazy. he doesnt listen to me, when he is on a leash he pulls like crazy and keeps going left and right, sometimes he has accidents in the house even though he knows where he has to go.
if i am walking him and he sees a child he goes crazy and starts barking like mad. when i come home from work my other dog greets me normally, wagging her tail and all happy but he, he goes jumping in my mouth, jumping alll over me, trying to knock me over, just jumping like mad.
i want to calm him down, train him but its impossible, cant afford a trainer atm but id like to know what i can do to calm him down (no medications) and why is he acting like this, is it normal or is there some mental issues?my other dog does not act like this at all. he is a very loving dog and i love him to bits but id like to calm him down especially when ppl come over.
btw he is a papillon, about 1.7yrs old
I’ve Just Rescued A Mom & Her 2 Pups. I Need To Crate Train Them But I Have No Idea How Big A Crate I Need.

This is not a large-breed dog. The mom is a Papillon mix and the dad was a medium-sized poodle-mix. I’ve allowed the pups and mom to have free reign of the apartment, with disasterous results. I love having them sleep in bed with me at night, but the “accidents” all over the apartment are horrid. Mom’s mostly house-trained. I just don’t always read her signals right. And I’m gone sometimes for hours at a time. I don’t want to put them in separate crates, but I don’t know what the best size would be. I also don’t have all that much room in my apartment for a huge crate either. HELP!!!
I Have A Yorkie That Is Paper Trained (easier For Mom Who Had A Stroke).?

I adopted a 5 -year old chihuahua/papillon mix today from the shelter, and I’ll get to bring her home Friday after she is spayed. She doesn’t appear to be housebroken, and I’m not sure if I should try to paper train her like the other dog or try to train her to go outside. Any suggestions? Also – any suggestions on helping the dogs become friends?
I Have A 4yr Old Papillon Who Is Going Backwards On The Housebreaking!?

She was a very good breeder’s brood-a show dog, and she must have been kenneled with other dogs. We were doing well and now, not so much. She comes in from outside and pees in her crate….lies in her bed all stinky and all. If I make her crate smaller, like the kennel version, I worry about elevating her anxiety which she seems to have as well regarding the crate. Now that she’s peed in her big crate, I fear I’ve made it okay for her to do now. She has this love/hate thing going on with the crate. Is there ANY hope she can be trained? Now, when I take her out (which we are doing hourly) she looks at me as if to say, “yeah? So…. a… what do you want to do now?” I’m wondering if
this is really a kidney problem. She can go all night, not pee at all in the morning.. like 10 hours. I’m stumped. This stinks. Literally!~
