Papillon Puppy Questions…?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I’m interested in the Papillon breed. If all goes well, I will purchase a Papillon puppy from a reputable breeder sometime in the future. But before I make any decisions, I have a few questions to ask the Papillon owners/breeders.
1) How much does a Papillon shed? Do some colors shed more than others?
2) On a scale of 1-10, how much does a Papillon bark (with 1 being not at all and 10 being excessive barking)? With proper training, how much can the barking be reduced? Also, what’re some ways to reduce barking?
3) Is it true that Papillon are hard to housebreak?
4) Does Papillon get along well with small pets?
5) Is Papillon suitable for apartment living in general?
6) How many times does a Papillon have to be walked daily? What times?
7) Finally, is Papillon a great companion dog to have?
Only serious inputs from Papillon owners/breeders, please.
Thanks.

They shed some of course, but not nearly as much as a double coated dog would. If you keep up with brushing, it is not too bad.

I’d say 6 or so. I have had shelties, and they bark a lot more. The barking is more of a warning barking- when there’s a strange noise, when there’s a strange dog outside, play, etc. I do have one that yaps while I’m gone, but her sister rarely ever barks at all. I’d say this varies a lot.
3) Is it true that Papillon are hard to housebreak?
We haven’t had any problems.
4) Does Papillon get along well with small pets?
Mine love my chinchilla, but I always supervise them out together.
5) Is Papillon suitable for apartment living in general?
Yes, but they need a lot of exercise and time, especially if they have no yard.
6) How many times does a Papillon have to be walked daily? What times?
We go for about 1 1/2 hours of walk throughout the day.
7) Finally, is Papillon a great companion dog to have?
Absolutely, if you want a smart, active, sensitive, clingy type of dog, lol. They require a lot of time, but what they give back is enormous. If you want a lap dog that doesn’t require much attention, it’s probably not the best breed choice. These guys are active and one of the smartest breeds.
my best friend has 2 papillons:::they r very well trained
1)they dont really shed..maybe a little
2)they bark aaaaalllloottt , like everytime they see a squirrel, it depends on the dog if it can be reduced.
3)um.. not really.. also, my friend’s dogs r trained that if they have to go to the bathroom they ring a bell on teh door with their nose
4)ABSOLUTELY
5)yes, they r small, and like to be inside
6)whenever is good for you, maybe a couple tiems a week
7)absolutely, they are reeally sweet dogs
Taylor D, ALL dogs need to be walked that many times a day (or at least once a day) never mind a week! A couple of times a week?
Just because the papillon is a small dog, it doesn’t mean it is lazier.
They won’t be able to walk as far, but they can still walk quite a big distance!
1) doesn’t shed so much
2) around 6ish
3) no, not with proper training
4) not so much but it can
5) ehh, yes its a small dog
6) about 2 to 3 times
7) YES!!
1) No, they all pretty much shed all the same (the color doesn’t matter but darker hair may seem more visible.) And in the hot months of the year they shed quite a bit.
2) About 7. With proper training, I’d say it can reduced to maybe a 4, (I never took my Papillon to any classes) When it starts barking you can try and calm it down either by petting it or trying to get it’s attention away from what ever it’s barking at.
3) No, that’s not true. They are just like other animals.
4) It depends how well you train them. They can be curious and accidentally hurt the animal.
5) Yes. If you don’t have a lot of vents and high places for the dog to jump onto then yes. But since it’s a small living space you have to make sure to take the dog out every night.
6) Since it’s a small dog, a walk around a park or down to a store would be enough for it. And every morning and every night before bed.
7) It is an amazing companion to have!!
