Papillon Or German Shepherd?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
So I want another puppy and I already have two Golden Retrievers. One is about 70-80 pounds and the other 60-70 pounds… At first I wanted a German Shepherd because my dad really likes them and wants one… we are very active people and go for walks and exercise a lot but we do leave the house an awful lot during summer but my parents bring our goldens to work everyday except summer they leave the dogs with me because I stay at home during the summer but we go on vacation at least once during summer. But anyway today I might have made another decision … I was looking at getting a papillon. I haven’t told my parents because they are not fond of small dogs but I think they are adorable and fit our life-style and are easy to train which is good for our hectic life-style. But I have a few questions.. do they bark a lot? Do they shed a lot? So I was wondering which dog do you think I should get? although im not so sure i can convince my parents to get a little dog *haha* and I have looked online everywhere but cant find a good breeder near NY.. vermont or any state next to NY is good too.

I’ve had both breeds actually. I grew up with a shepherd and now have 4 papillons…
Both breeds are very smart and very easily trained. The big difference is the size of course. Shepherds will need a good workout daily. Paps love exercise too but are easier just because they’re smaller. Paps are really just warning barkers. they will bark at the doorbell and things like that. Mine are not too yappy really. They dont’ act like little dogs at all. They’re very active. Also, shepherds vary a lot depending on lines, but ours was much sharper temperament wise. The paps are very soft and sensitive. They need very gentle handling.
Shepherds shed more imo, but the hair is shorter. They have a double coat, paps have a single coat. They shed but not terribly much if you just brush them a couple times a week.
I like both and want both in the future. It just depends on what you’re looking for.http://www.papillonclub.org/pcabreedersl… — papillon breeder referral list.
omg thats so cool because i have a papillon and a golden retriever and they get along great!! i recommend the papillon because they are great dogs and aren’t way little, they are the perfect size! mine barks a lot when he hears something, but thats what dogs do! they are also very smart and cute and cuddly!! =) go with the papillon!!!!
From the sounds of it you should probably stick with the larger dog, but it really depends on what you are looking for. Here is some information about both to help you decide.

Good Luck with your decision!
I know for a fact German Shepherds shed a lot more then one would think. Our Shepherd mix sure does, and he’s mostly shepherd. Try looking around http://www.petfinder.com/
There shelters list their dogs in need of a home and under classifieds people list their own dogs that need a new home. On there you can find pure-breeds, puppies, and anything your really looking for. Good luck.
my friends on the next street to us have a papillon, they sure keep you busy and happy! they wont need much exercise i havent noticed them shed much!! papillons bark if someone is at the door… they are sooo cute if they are dressed up in a sweater, or a coat.
Well Shepherds shed a lot also, if you are worrird about that… probably not since you have goldens. Yes Papillons bark alot, generally. I love German shepherds, very biased! I would go with them
My brother has a papillon. Its hiper and annoying. My mother has a German Shepherd and he is awesome. I don’t even like dogs but I like him.
I would go for the german shepherd it sounds like it would fit in your life a lot better than a small dog.
Do research on both breeds, especially activity/energy level and get whichever suits your needs the best. Barnes and Noble has a pet section with a ton of dog books. No need to buy, just go and read through them.
Please, please give rescues a thought vs going to a breeder. They have a rescue for every breed. Just google “german shepherd rescue NY” or “papillion rescue NY”. They have lots of purebreds and mixes of that breed and they need homes desperately. Alot of times they have litters of puppies too. The best thing about a rescue is that the dog will be living in someone’s home so they can tell you all about personality, behavior, etc of that particular dog (and sometimes the dog comes partially or fully trained!). They are also significantly less expensive than a breeder.
