Papillon Or Chihuahua, Which Should I Get?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I want a smart dog that can be trained various tricks and I would like one that enjoys walks and playing but is not constantly craving walking and playing. It is important they would get along with another dog an that they are ok with children even though there are no children in the house. Also, it would be left along whilst I work full time during weekdays-but-it would have another very small and friendly dog there, plenty of toys, water and access to the garden.
Which do you think?

It sounds like the perfect home fir a Papillon! I have 2 and they are wonderful little dogs. I have had the breed for 11 years now. They are highly intelligent and learn tricks easily-they love to make their people laugh.
But please do research on the breed to be sure they are right for you. They can be hard to housebreak and they shed. But their good points outweigh the bad 10 to 1!
I have two chihuahuas and my family has a papillion, who visits often.
Both types of dogs are great. Along with my chihuahuas, I also have a yellow lab, and the chihuahuas love her. To me, the chihuahuas are more loveable, they love to cuddle. To katielyn, chihuahuas are NOT intimidated by other dogs, my chi’s have been known to make a greyhound back away. One of my chi’s love kids and the papillon lives in a house with two children under 5, and he’s great with them. With that it depends on the dog.
Papillions are extremely smart dogs, so they need CONSTANT mental stimulation, lest they pick up bad behaviors like barking, digging, or relieving themselves inside. This may be a problem if you’re away a lot.
On the other hand, Chihuahuas are often tempermental animals, who through years of careful crap breeding have become small demons. Since people think “they’re little and cute, they must be a baby”, they never get disciplined properly, are carried everywhere, given people food, and are allowed to do anything. Now, then again, the only way to get a demon is to get a backyard breeder. From a reputable breeder and proper training, Chihuahuas aren’t as bad as BYB Chewtoys. (can you tell that I don’t like Chihuahuas?)
Do some research and see which of the two would be perfect for you!
You really need to contact some good “reputable” breeders of each breed and visit their home where you can see several members of each breed. Meeting one Chi or one Pap isn’t gonna give you a good picture of what the breed is really like.
Also, meeting with a BYB isn’t gonna tell you what the show bred members of that breed are like.
I think Chis are more lap dogs. They are also feistier. Paps are a little softer in temperament but they aren’t true lap dogs. They want to be your buddy more than your baby, although they do love being pampered. Paps are highly athletic and super trainable which could be great if that is what you want and it could be bad if you can’t handle such a demanding dog.
Before Paps got popular and well known by the general public in the 90s, the only people who really owned them outside of show breeders were people who were heavily in obedience and then agility. That kinda tells you what kind of dog they are and whom they are best suited for.
i think u should get a Papillon, because in my opinion they are cuter, love to exercise, and make friends easily. A chihuahua usually feels intimidated by other dogs, and constantly craves attention, like walks and playing.
Do some breed research and decide which best fits your needs. Papillons are supposedly one of the top most intelligent dogs. Chihuahuas… well, they can be difficult to train.

If you get a Chihuahua I suggest a female. The males lift leg wherever they please and I was never able to break my boy of that, no matter how many times he got scolded or swatter with the newspaper.
if your planning on teaching it tricks go with the papillon
they also are better with other dogs and children
and like to play
papillons are often show dogs
Papillon Way cuter! and not too nervous!
Papillon, they’re one of the smartest dog breeds.
Papillon their so cute<3333333333
papillon because chihuahuas are annoying as hell
There both really cute but the papillon have furry ears,Lol
chihuahua… I have one. She is great.
chihuhha
u should get a maltipoo!!
a Papilon is say this because even though chihuahuas are cute they bark and growl when there afraid and they always usually have there tail in there leg and when you walk them you will have to watch out not to step on them or for other dogs me personally i would get a Yorkie because like a Papilon they are not really as afraid and they are a little bigger then chihuahuas so it would be a little harder to step on The Papillon has the appearance of a dainty toy breed, but many owners will claim that their dogs are “big dogs in little dog suits”. Some people find that their Papillon is very capable of handling a good five-mile walk. One aspect of the Papillon that has led many to believe the “big dog” assertion is this breed’s surprising athletic ability. In contrast to its staid and stately representation in the Old Master portraits, the Papillon is highly energetic and intelligent. The breed is far older than any other represented by the AKC and is more notable for its psychological abilities than its athletic parlor tricks; the Papillon’s true strength lies in its ability to perceive the emotional needs of its owner and to translate them into a healthy psychological environment. In other words, the animal becomes what the owner needs at the time, depending on circumstances. Provided their genetic structure is sound, and they are not the product of “puppy mill” inbreeding, they are generally healthy animals. Papillons are built for movement, and most do not need any encouragement to apply their energy to athletic activities.
