Papillon- Good Dog For Our Family?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
We were looking at small dog breeds and Papillon’s caught our eye. We are a family of six- three children under six, three adults and someone is always home. We have a young cat that has no dog experience to our knowledge as is very loving so I think she’d be ok with a dog. We’d be able to give it it’s adequate training, grooming, and athletic needs as well.
If you don’t think this particular breed will fit our family, can you suggest any other small dog breeds that might work?

Most toy dogs are too high-strung and delicate for young children, and some terriers have such high prey drive that you can’t trust them with a cat. I think that if you look for those two qualities, you’ll come up with some good dog breeds. Off the top of my head, I can think of border terrier, beagle, cocker spaniel, cavalier king charles spaniel, miniature schnauzer, french bulldog, and boston terrier. Hope this helps!
Small dogs and young children do not mix. The dog could get dropped quite easily. Children pull ears and tails…. it’s just a bad combination.
Get a slightly larger dog that is still somewhat small– like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (they are just around 20 pounds) or miniature schnauzer.
Don’t go for anything under 20 pounds.
Edit: I’ve owned both a 8 pound yorkie and a 5 pound poodle and both of them hated children, too.

read up on that breed and you can see the other breeds too. there are alot of factors that can influence your decision.
do you want a hypoallergenic, non-shedding dog?
do you have time to walk it daily or do you want a dog with a lower energy level?
do you have time to brush the dog daily?
Never decide on a breed based on its looks. always look at its temperament and make sure that it is the right dog for you and your lifestyle. Hope that helps :]
Paps sounds pretty good for you guys. They are on the Top 10 for most intelligent breeds, so they need a mental outlet for their energy as well. There are some good Yahoo! Groups that offer more info on Papillons on here as well that are worth joining.
Make sure you buy from a reputable breeder or possibly adopt an older Papillon
