I have a book on Papillons and it says they dont bark much and are really easy to train. But I recently ran into somebody who owns one and disagreed with what I had read. Can you guys help me out here and give me some insight to how they REALLY are?

Papillons are *very* easy to train, they catch on quickly when learning new things. They are one of the most trainable toy breeds of dogs, and are also in the top-10 list of the most intelligent breeds.
(Note here that due to their personalities and intelligence, many papillons will figure out ways to try to manipulate their owners and other pets in the house. One of my pap’s favorite ‘lies’ is if she knows she isn’t supposed to chew on something, she will place one of her toy right beside it because she thinks I’m going to be fooled and think she’s actually chewing on the toy. Another “trick” they play is to go bark at the door so the other dogs will think there’s a visitor, then when the other dog joins the papillon at the door, the papillon takes the oppurtunity to steal the other dog’s toy it was playing with.)
Many papillons do better with an “ask” attitude to training rather than a “tell” attitude. They like to feel like their actions are their own ideas. Many are highly food motivated, so keep treats on hand for training.
And yes, papillons are a vocal breed. They WILL bark, but they don’t bark incessantly and they don’t just bark to hear themselves bark. They are alarm barkers, so when they think you need to know something, they will bark.
Best way to handle a barker is to thank him/her. When your dog barks, call it to you and say “thank you” and give it a treat. The dog will then learn after it gives 2-3 warning barks, it has sufficiently warned you of whatever it thought you needed to be alerted to.

it all depends on how you treat your dog and how the training goes.
it doesn’t matter what breed they are, they just might have a more tendency to bark a lot, it all depends on you, really.
i have seen a papillon before, and pet it, but never heard it bark so excessively.
so just learn about dogs/papillons in gerneral (anything. to behavioral problems, health problems common in papillons, sizes, where you should buy them… etc) and maybe about the barking part too. that way, you can avoid the barking/yapping stuff.

i think that each dog is different and you can’t guess wich will bark or not.

Why don’t you join a Yahoo Group for Papillions? That way you will be able to learn all about the breed and there will probably be some breeders there who can give you tips on care and training.

They are popular in obed at shows because in general they are so easy to train and most small dogs are barkers if not trained. I have 5 MinPins and they vary in barking, 1 is a pain in the butt even at 13 yrs old, 1 barks twice a year and the rest fall inbetween. My dogs are trained to not bark at the neighbors and are usually good about it. My 13 yr old thinks he is an Aussie and barks at the dog running around like he is herding him. I had guys in the front yard digging up the yard to put in cables and none of the 7 dogs barked at them even tho they were 10 feet from the fence. I’ve never had a hard to train dog, most of the dogs people told me were stupid were actually smarter than the owners and trained basic obed. in 1 day.

Tweek is almost 5 years old now. THEY BARK! They are alert dogs and he thinks we need to know about every noise and every time anyone, and I mean anyone, walks in the room he’s in. He’s so smart that we just talk to him like a little kid and he does what we tell him to…except to not bark. They love walks and to be with people. Great little dogs with easy coat care compared to my Lhasa. I’d get another.
