MINIATURE SCHNAUZER!!!
Well if you are looking for the perfect dog for you I recommend you visit http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselector.do
take the quiz on what your ideal dog is, and how much time are you willing to spend on it (grooming, energy level, ect...) and you will get a list of breeds right for you. I took the quiz right before I got my miniature schnauzer and we are like a match made in heaven!! She was so easy to train!! Well Good luck finding your dog!.
here are pics of my dog

Get a yorkie. They do not shed, are not hyper and are excellent with children. Yes, they can be a little harder to house train...but I am sure you will have plenty of time to take up with a dog if your mom agreed. I have a 3yr old female yorkie, she weighs 6lbs and is very smart. She sits, shakes, lays, rolls over, speak and knows 4 of her toys by name. Very easy to teach tricks.

You will have better luck with an adult dog getting along with kids than puppies. Pups want to bite and chew and wrestle anything they percieve to be another puppy. Small children included. Take your time visit the potential dogs several times. With kids, without kids, in the shelter, in the play areas, ask if a staff member or volunteer will go with you to walk them outside. This the best way to chose a dog. Puppies need 2 YEARS of training and hard work to get to the loveble well behaved adult you want AT LEAST!

If you opt to go with a pure bred dog, my vote would be Maltese. They are small, cute, loving, loyal, and do not shed. My Maltese is now 4 years old. He was relatively easy to train, and has been around my 3 year old niece since she was born. He loves to lick her, but has never tried to bite her. In fact, they are the best of friends, although we sometimes have to make sure she doesn't try to hug him too hard. I would be lost without my little lap buddy. Good luck, and congratulations!

well, do you want high maintenance dogs? schnauzers, poodles, maltese, yorkies, all high maintenance dogs who need grooming every 6-8 weeks, around $30-40 dollars, can be more depending on where you live. i have mine done every 6-8 weeks. it gets pretty costly. low maintenance dogs are the smooth coated dachshound (spelled wrong, i think), the pappion is also less maintenance than you would think. chihuahua's are also low maintenance. fox terriers, the smooth coat ones are low maintenance, not sure of the wire haired ones. king charles spaniels have a lot of inherited diseases, so be careful there. boston terrier might be a good choice also. you could go to the library and get an encyclopedia of dog breeds and do some research on the different breed and narrow it down to what you are looking for like temperment, grooming, shedding, how big it gets, etc. good luck.
