Just Bought A Papillon??!?

So I went to a dog adoption center today looking to buy my new best friend! Right when I walked in I saw THE CUTEST dog ever, a papillion! It was love at first sight. Apparently it was born on the streets, and was found a few days after it was born without a mom or any brothers or sisters. It’s 13 weeks now, and i haven’t detected any problems concerning it’s knees or anything but it has a tendency to knaw/chew/nibble anything in sight! Is this the norm for dogs their age or is it a problem that I’ll need to address in the future? If it is normal how can I stop her from chewing on ME? Also, if you have any pointers for training her it’ll be much apprecieated. Thanks so much. =]

Definitely chewing is norm for puppies but don’t let her get away with chewing on you. This is a dominance that can get worse as she gets older. The best way to teach her not to chew on you or other things that are not good for her such as electrical wires you might want to invest in a bottle of bitter apple spray. It is a taste deterrant and works very quickly. Just spray it on the things you don’t want her mouth around and she will get the message.
As for training her, get her started as soon as possible. The first thing to teach is ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘stay’ the basic obedience stuff and you should do well. Enjoy your newest member of the family and since we are talking about a Papillon here, she will definitely keep you on your toes.

Papillons are so cute and nice. All puppy will chew on everything, some more than others. The first website is all about papillons, the second is about training chewing pups. Have fun with your little buddy!

It is very normal for a puppy to chew on things constantly.
Whenever your pup chews the wrong thing, remove her to a neutral area and give her something she’s allowed to chew. No shouting, no smacks with a newspaper or hand — just matter-of-fact corrections in a firm tone of voice. “No, that’s mine, here’s something for you” ….
Enjoy your new pup; that is a great breed!
