Yes you are on the right track as far as I am concerned and we always have 4 dogs in my home. I now have all pugs and they are all females. They will fight for packleader once in awhile, but they get along very well. The fights are mild because they have equal strength. That is something to consider just as you are thinking. You also said you found the perfect breed for you so stick with that. Dogs of the same breed get along well. As for males, I loved all of mine (mostly poodles and terriers) but my piano leg has stood for all the territory marking I care to subject it, or me, to. The males always hike. Nature. Good luck. You need to let your JapChin grow up before you get another dog. It is not mandatory, but it would be better, because if you got your pups at the same time, they might bond with each other instead of with you. Also, I think that any dog can be laid back. Their are laid back pit bulls and Rottweilers.
Here’s what I think. I think that, first of all, bond with your puppy. I think that you are probably already bonded. Next, since you are bonded, go to the Pap breeder (or chin breeder) and choose the shy one, since you want one thats laid back. And then your puppies will keep each other company while you are busy.

i’ve heard of many people saying that a certain breed gets along best with other dogs of the same breed, but honetly, i’ve neever made the experience. Although some times they do have preferences about size or sex. It’s best if you get your female spayed and the second dog spayed or neutered as well. that way it will much more likely that they get a long well and that there will be no attacking your little female.
a 2nd puppy is a good idea if your dog is alone more than what she should be, then the 2 can keep each other company, but even then, they shouldn’t be alone all day!
i wouldn’t worry about the size as much, they’re all dogs and can communicate with each other and unless one is a huge reckless dog and the other one a shy tiny one, nothing much should happen. i think if Chins work for you, why not get another chin, regardless if it might be a little bigger. unless you pup gets along better with either females or males, it shouldn’t matter, this problem usually arises with males that are neutered and sometimes females that aren’t spayed. (get them both operated, there shuoldn’t be any problems, especially not if they’re both young!!)
but do pick one that isn’t overly dominant. it doesn’t necessarily have to be another quiet one, they could compliment each other pretty well if the second one was a cheerful little guy, he still wouldn’t do her any damage….
and last but not least, get a good breeder (maybe the same one again) and bring your dog with you when chosing the new one to check if they get along all right, jsut to make sure! good luck!

At this age, any small breed would suit your puppy. I would go with a male as the female might not accept another female into her house so well. Don’t worry about the pups not getting along, they will work it out between themselves.

Well, first of all, try to think through your reasons for wanting a second dog. It is twice the work and expense. How long is your dog alone at home? How much time do you have to give the dog? If it is very little, then there are 2 dogs not getting enough attention instead of one.
If you do decide to get a second dog, probably in the two toy breeds mentioned, it would work out fine. Just make sure they are introduced slowly and not “forced” on one another. Make sure that if they do not get along, the breeder of the second one will take the dog back with little problem.
Usually, it is better to have one of each sex (both neutered) to have the best situation. Two girls often will not get along and two boys are often, as you said, hiking legs all over the place to prove their manhood.
If your Chin is happy in the situation as it is, though, I see no need to obtain a second dog.

if they are fixed before 6 months you should be fine on the jumping part
and if she is laid back do not get a dog that is active or high strung some dogs are just natural energizer bunnies they just never stop
it will be good for her to have a play mate if you leave for work or are gone out
