Is The Papillon A Dumb Dog?

I heard that papillons are dumb and can’t be trained to live inside the house without making a mess. Is this true?
Is it possible to house brake papillons.

Quite the opposite! Papillons are very intelligent dogs. They are often considered the most trainable of all the toy breeds.
Papillons are sometimes too smart for thier own good! They are tricksters and will find ways to try to manipulate their owners.
If they aren’t supposed to have something, they’ll try to make it look like they have one of their toys and hide the “forbidden object” behind it.
My pap also tricked my parents poodle when I was dog-sitting for them a few months ago. She would run to the door and bark so the poodle would drop the toy it had to check out what the commotion was about, then my pap would run back and steal the dropped toy.
Many people find small breed dogs hard to housebreak. I personally haven’t found them any harder to housebreak than large dogs, the key is to keep them in your sight. (Unlike big dogs, small puppies can slip into places like behind furniture and do their “business”, making it hard to catch if you can’t watching closely.)

The papillon is very far from a ‘dumb breed’. They’re often listed in the top 10 dog breeds intelligence wise. The excel in sports and obedience and mine pick up commands much faster than any of my other dogs.
They’re almost too smart- they’re constantly thinking and are great problem solvers. This can present problems, though, because they remember things. People who have a hard time training them are usually doing one of two things wrong- 1) using too harsh a training method- papillons are sensitive dogs. Or 2) they’re inconsistent in their training methods. Since they’re not dumb they remember when you mess up.
This is why people have problems potty training them! They are not consistent with their potty training methods, so the dogs figure out it’s okay to go in the floor. If you’re consistent in your training, they’re one of the most delightful and capable breeds to work with.

Paps are one of the top obedience breeds so no they are not dumb. You can housebrEAK any breed if you are willing to put in the time and trouble. And old adage is “Trainers end up with the dog they deserve”, so lazy trainers=lazy, poorly trained dogs and persistent willing trainers=well trained willing dogs. Many MinPins are given up to rescue because “they can not be housebroken” but I own 4 male dogs, 1 Dobe and 3 MinPins plus have a male MinPin foster and all are clean in the house. I always supervise closely a new foster so they do not get the freedom to try and mark until they realize leg lifting is not allowed. Many breeds are harder to housebreak with toy breeds and hounds topping the list. Pet Store dogs and BYB dogs are very difficult to housebreak since they are brought up living in their own filth.

    Far from it.
My friend lost a wonderful little Pap recently. Suzette was not only a therapy dog she was also a 9/11 hero when she went with her owner to help calm the kids waiting at the pier for missing parents on that terrible day. Her loss was a terrible blow to many people.
Her younger sibling is now in training to be a therapy dog also.
Paps are wonderful and are very bright. It’s all in the hands of the owner.
