Papillons are in the top ten most intelligent dogs, they are also the only toy breed in the top ten. Which can make for interesting days. They are very intelligent so you must keep them mentally occupied with kongs, chews, and if you really are training savvy you can play a game of hide and seek. Basically you hide bits of food throughout the house and your Papillon must sniff them out. My paps love this game.
Get a nice pin brush, they do the job very nicely. Brush them once a week and if you have time more than that. They are shedders. In the Papillon community we joke around that we never wear anything dark since after a cuddle session with our dogs, it will look gray. So expect a lot of hair and perhaps invest in a good vacuum cleaner.
As for food, Papillons have small jaws so small bites are recommended. Check the ingredients on your food to make sure they don’t contain any filler items like wheat gluten, by products, and definitely no corn meal.
Good luck with your Papillon!
Papillons are nice little dogs, and I hear they’re one of the most trainable of toy breeds.
I can’t give you much advice about the food, but I can tell you that Papillons do shed. You should give him a good brushing every once in awhile to keep his coat free of mats, too. Also, like other toy breeds, Papillons are very fragile. They have fine bones so you might want to keep an eye on your dog if he jumps on and off furniture because it can be very easy for them to hurt themselves.
Papillons also tend to be barkers. You can take care of this though with a bit of training.
Good luck luck with your new dog. I think it’s great that you adopted him.
Wonderful! You are in for a treat… I have had Paps for 11 years and have 2 little Pap girls right new.
They are delightful little dogs, highly intelligent and with a great sense of humor. They are devoted and will follow you everywhere!
They do shed;l regular brushing helps, but I will tell you up front… I no longer wear black LOL. I feed mine Purina ONE chicken & rice with about a tablespoon of canned mixed in and they thrive on it, with beautiful, healthy coats. Teach them early what QUIET means. I don’t tolerate random barking, and they know this.
Congrats on the new Pap! You are gona have fun!
I don’t believe they’re excessive shedders, and a holistic food is best. Mix what he’s currently on in with the holistics, to help his stomach adjust.
Papis are really smart dogs, so they need a lot of excercise and mental stimulation.
