If A Papillon Puppy Growls When You Try To Take Something Away, How Do You Train Them To Stop?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
Whatever you do don’t jump away and show fear. It will encourage more aggressive behavior.
Calmy keep your hand above the toy to block your puppy from it.
If your dog is play growling it will immediately back away from the toy.
If your dog seems to get more intense it is challenging you. (you may get bit but it’s a puppy now so it won’t hurt. If you get bit stay absolutely still and act like the biting doesn’t hurt you at all) Use a loud noise like a horn or someone behind you clapping assertively to distract your dog and snap the nasty thought from it’s mind. Calmly take the toy and when your dog is calm give it back.
Just practice constantly taking your dogs toys and food to get him used to it.

Oh, I love these questions. Is she growling when you are playing? That is normal. But you still should be able to remove anything from her. Don’t back down. Tell her calmly and and assertively to ‘release it’ as you are removing it from her. She probably is not sure of her boundaries, limitations and rules yet so this is the time to create them and stick to them. Once she has learned what she can and cannot do, you will be able to remove the object without growling.
A firm No, release it is a good way to start. You may also consider backing that up with a treat. Reward the good behavior of her releasing the object, but do not reward until she stops growling.
Stand your ground and let her know who is in charge. You.
If it’s a puppy, it’s probably talking to you or thinking you’re playing.
My dog growl talks. Scares the heck out of non-dog owners. I just laugh at them. Wolves growl talk too.
We met a gorgeous gray wolf on a leash in a city park once. My dog went all the way around smelling the wolf. Arriving back at it’s nose, the wolf let out a soft welcoming growl. It was so beautiful. A hello, I’m so glad to see someone like me growl.
I will never forget the soft, welcoming sound of that growl. I wish dogs knew that growl.
So not all growls are on the way to vicious. Some are just dog words. They only way they know how to talk.
