How Old Should Your Puppy Be When You Start To Train Him?

I have a 10 week old Papillon… should I train him now or is he too young to understand? Is crate training the best method?

I hate crates. You should start training him as soon as you get him so he knows who the boss is and what she wants him to do.

Start training him/her immediately! Sign up for an obedience course right now. They may not learn sit, stay or heel, but this is the best way for your pup to learn how to behave with other dogs. This will reduce aggression and teach your pup how to play with other dogs. Continue with obedience courses to learn the commands as they mature.
Housebreaking starts immediately also. You are actually getting a two week late start. Every minute you’re with your pup you are teaching him/her. Take the pup outside hourly if you can. The crate method is great for night time or whenever you must leave the pup for any lenght of time. With the small bladder that puppies have it’s just not realistic for them to hold it all night, but at least the mess is contained to the crate. And also they learn that they do not want to mess on themselves quickly. There is less frustration all around, for both of you. Good Luck!

Train from birth. He will not understand, but if it will get implanted in his brain as the “norm” if you instill in him right from wrong from birth. Train him with a crate early, (at birth) as he grows he will think of the crate or cage as “home”. If he didn’t experiance the crate early he will hate it. Trust me!!! 10 weeks might be too old already, good luck.

Any training should be started at approximately six weeks old..

You can begin training your dog as soon as you want. It can take a lot of time and patience no matter the age of your dog. And there is not a real best method of training. Every owner and every dog is unique, and you can train your new puppy however you want, as long as you use Patience, kindness, and lots of rewards. Good luck!

Your puppy is old enuf to start with training! A puppy kindergarten is the best start in the direction of basic obedience and he learn to socialize with other dogs and people this way. Even before you start a class, you can start teaching basic commands of sit and down.
Here is a link to a great set of videos to get you in the obedience training direction… http://www.petvideo.com/index.cgi?channe…
I also suggest beginning crate training right away. Your pup won’t like it at first, but he will be okay with it eventually. At this age, your pup can’t hold his water for very long and you will probably have to take him out at nite time for potty runs. Our Border Collie puppy was 4 months before she could make it thru the nite, but each dog is different.
You shouldn’t leave your pup in the crate for long periods during the day time either, without the opportunity to go out for a potty run. A dog won’t go where they sleep, in the “den”, but if you crate for too long, sometimes they just can’t hold it. So make sure your crating is short periods of an hour or so for now and this time can increase as your puppy gets older. About an hour for each month your puppy is old.
    Good luck!

Immediately after entering your home, many people wait entirely to long to start, hence they have problems. I will leave you a link that will help you get started, do not wait now is the time. (O:http://www.peteducation.com/category_sum…

We start training our puppies immediately. I currently have a 9 week old puppy and have been working on training him since I got him at 7 weeks. He is perfectly able to learn at this age. Crate training works very well. Make it a safe, fun place for your pup to be. Lots of toys and treats.
