How Do I Leash Train A Papillon?

My papillon is almost 8 months old. When he is on his leash he won’t move. Any suggestions? I am scared of hurting him because he only weighs 4.8 pounds. I worry about choking him or breaking his neck because he is so little.

You would be suprised as to how sturdy little dogs are. Don’t worry about injuring him. First make sure that your collar is on properly and that you can fit 2 fingers between his neck and collar. Second put the leash on and let him walk around with it on for awhile. There is no telling how long. As soon as he is walking around comfortably with it and try to walk around your house with it on. Little dogs are more sensitive so he will need alot of your praise. Tell him what a good boy he is when he walks to you. once you can walk him inside take him out. Take some treats to start out and just take baby steps. They do not learn this in a couple of minutes so be PATIENT. Do not get frusterated at him or he will not move. Look at him as a toddler if that helps.

put the leash and collar on him and just let him walk around with it for a little while so he can get use to the feeling of it , then maybe offer some kind of reward (treats) for him .

When I tried leash training my papillon puppy, I had the same problem: she wouldn’t budge. I was using a retractable leash at first, and I’m guessing the resistance from it made her uncomfortable, because I switched to a very simple nylon leash and she was a little more willing to walk around with it on. Within a few days she was walking outside with me leading her. I still have some trouble getting her to cooperate if she wants to go one direction and I want to go another, but she’s only 4 months old so as far as I know she’s doing great!! Hope this helped.
