How Do I Crate Train My 7 Month Old Papillon?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I have a 7 month old papillon that I leave in the cage when I’m not home. I leave a water dish and wee- wee pad down. By the time I get home he flips over the water bowl and tears up the wee- wee pad , and lays in his own urine. I can’t give him a bath everyday because his skin will dry out but I don’t want him to smell. What can I do so he uses the crate like a bed?

There are plenty of websites that can help you with this. I will tell you one thing, if you leave that wee-wee pad in his/her den, they think it is ok to pee in their den, and you are actually promoting this behavior by you putting it in there day after day. He may actually think its a toy. Wee-wee pads promote urination in your home, just like newspaper. They are stupid. I trained my pups by just watching them and taking them out after they eat, drink, play, or wake up (no matter how long the nap). It only took a week to potty train the both of them.
I have two golden retriever pups that are only 7 weeks old. They have not yet peed or pooped in their “homes.”
Dogs are inherently clean animals and if in the wild, they peed in their dens, the other occupants would not be very happy.
Being that I have two pups in the same “den,” I do NOT leave anything in there except a toy or two (knowing that whatever else in there will spill).
I recommend that you try leaving nothing in there, your dog should be fine. When he shows responsibility, maybe then you can reward him with water and food IN his cage.
P.S. A friend of mine trained her chihuahua to use those water things that hamsters use, although its much bigger…there is no mess

You need to remove the water dish (he doesn’t need it since he isn’t running around) along with the pee pad. There should not be enough room in the crate for him to go to the bathroom. It should only be big enough for him to stand and turn around. When you get one that is a proper size, he won’t have room to make an area of it the bathroom and another area to lie down in. Simply get a smaller crate and a blanket or towel for the bottom so he can nest in it. Take the dog out for a walk before putting him in the crate and take him out again as soon as you get home.
Well first you have to stop leaving water in the crate. My dog has an empty crate except for his blanket to sleep on. You should never have a pee pad in the crate this tells the dog its OK to pee in there. If there is no water than it is less likely the dog will pee. give the dog water awhile before you leave and when your getting ready to leave please take the dog out. Then as soon as you get back take the dog out. then give water and food. As long as you give the dog water through out the day when your home the dog should be OK while your at work or doing what you have to do. But in the crate shouldn’t be water or pads. hope i have helped.
