Help! I Just Brought Home A 6 Month Old Papillon Puppy…?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I am crate training my dog, he’s great. I take him out a times always with a leash and praise him for going outside but he has never piddled outside. He comes inside from a mile and a half walk, goes in his crate and piddles, he has no problem pooping on his walks. Help! I am so frustrated I want to enjoy him in the house but I feel uneasy about letting him run around until I know he will piddle outside. Thank you.

Start controlling his water intake. Give water at only certain times of the day (after meals, after walk, etc) and then know that he will have to pee within 10mins to 1hr after drinking.
When you take your pup outside, DO NOT come back inside until he has peed outside. The first few times you do this it may take a while, but even if you are standing outside for 30 minutes in the rain, don’t come inside. When the pup finally pees outside, treat and give tons of praise. Eventually he will get the idea that it is better to pee outside than in the crate.
You are right to feel uneasy about giving him more freedom in the house, I definitely never give my dogs anything at home (freedom wise) if they haven’t proven to me that they can be trusted. No free roaming of the house until your boy has shown you he is house trained!
The Crate is to Big get a smaller crate just big enough for the dog to turn around and lay down in anything bigger gives them room to go at one end and sleep at the other a dog will not go where they sleep this will force him to only go outside keep a close eye on he or she in the house if they have accidents get a old soda can clean it out and place a couple of pennies inside tape up the hole and when the dog begins to squat throw the can just to the side of the dog on the floor the noise from the pennies hitting the can will stop the dog in its tracks allowing you to then place them outside this will also provide for a more positive training method a apposed to scolding or yelling hope this helps
Listen lady, maype you are pappering your dog to much. You should try putting your kids first. Especially the daughter, or son, you never know, that is being ignored… daily. thanks for your time.
Just keep trying, one day he will!
try and give him some water before you leave, so he has some water to pee out. Or take him to the local dog park for fun, (be sure to have all the shots updated first) perhaps he will follow other dog’s leads.
Best of luck!
I agree, the crate may be too big and therefore the dog has no problem going in the crate and then laying down away from the mess. Make sure you are cleaning up the piddle so there is no odor left in the crate. Good Luck.
